Sprout leaders encourage positive socialization, have fun and contribute to the lives of others by co-leading day and evening activities throughout New York City for small groups of adults with developmental disabilities. Groups usually consist of 11 participants and 3 Sprout leaders.

What do NYC leaders do?

In addition to getting to know the participants and keeping the group together, leaders are also asked to handle some logistical elements of certain activities. These duties may include handling a small budget, distributing event tickets or directing a participant to the nearest subway station.

Who are Sprout participants?

Our participants are 16 and older, with an average age ranging from the mid-40’s to mid-50’s. Participants in this program are considered high-functioning and very independent. This is a highly social group whom enjoy meeting new people and experiencing new things.

What is the time commitment?

Sprout leaders can participate anywhere from one activity a month to a few activities a week depending on their schedule. Sprout outings vary from 2 – 5 hours and start no earlier than 6pm on weekdays and can be anytime during the weekend. We require that leaders commit themselves for the full duration of the outings they choose.

What type of outings can Sprout leaders expect to join?

The NYC Day and Evening Program organizes about 13 outings a month within the 5 boroughs of New York City. Typical outings include bowling, sporting events, art performances, concerts, museum visits, dinners, street fairs and movie nights. Every month has a variety of different outings reflecting the season.

Are there any special skills or requirements?

No special experience or education is required to become a Sprout leader. We encourage people from all cultures and professions, and of all ethnic and educational backgrounds. Once accepted into the program, you will receive the necessary tools to sign up for outings and learn how to assist our participants.

Requirements include:

  • Must be at least 21 years old
  • Speak fluent English
  • Participate in an interview
  • Provide references
  • Willingness to complete necessary background checks
  • Participate in a training session
  • Comfortable interacting with people with developmental disabilities

Due to COVID-19, sprout has suspended all programming. Our nonprofit is in urgent need of

funding, so that we may resume our supportive travel programs, as soon as it is safe to do so.
